The Strokes Confirmed for Lollapalooza

It’s official.  The Strokes have been confirmed as headliners for Lollapalooza, according to Julian Casablancas himself.
Via the Chicago Tribune…
He says he’s pretty stoked about the band’s string of festival dates this summer. “We’re getting the biggest offers of our career,” he says. “It feels great, because I remember people writing things like ‘We’ll see if [...]

New MGMT – ‘Flash Delirium’ off ‘Congratulations’

From MGMT’s new record ‘Congratulations’ which, judging from this song, is going to sound much different from MGMT’s debut record. I’m unsure if that’s a good thing.

Listen: The White Stripes’ Entire ‘Under Great White Northern Lights’ Live Album

The live album will be released with a documentary about Jack and Meg White travelling to each of Canada’s provinces on March 16.  You can hear the entire live album right here.
As I’m posting this, I’ve made it half-way through and Under Great White Northern Lights is pretty great.  It’s a no-nonsense live record and, [...]

Watch Zach Galifianakis’ ‘SNL’ Monologue

I’ve watched almost every Saturday Night Live monologue over the last four years and Zach Galifianakis’ from last night was the first to seem like it wasn’t written by the SNL people. Which means one of two writers. Either Galifianakis did an awesome job selling it or he wrote it himself.
Not [...]

Watch Vampire Weekend on ‘Saturday Night Live’

My favorite thing about this video is the tone of the lead guitarist’s instrument during the solo.

RipcordNews.com Phrase of the Day: “Scare Mongering”

I was listening to the song in the video above today and, for the first time, was able to pick out the “scare mongering” lyric. If you read this site or follow the RipcordNews Twitter feed on a semi-regular basis, you know my well-documented difficulties hearing lyrics. I call this “The Gloaming Effect” where [...]

More ‘Phrazes for the Young’ Deluxe Edition Videos

I don’t know if I’ve blocked these deluxe edition videos out of my conscious because I dislike them so emphatically or if these are new, but I finally found two deluxe edition videos I like a lot. The acoustic version ‘11th Dimension’ definitely sounds the best acoustically.
Oh, and Julian does his best [...]

A summation of Radiohead’s “Videotape” (AKA Why Can’t I Write Like This?)

Very rarely will I come across a piece of writing on the Internet that I both learn from and admire.  As weird of a combination as that is, it’s what I experienced today when I read about a three-paragraph summation explaining why Radiohead’s “Videotape” is one of the band’s best songs on Culturemap.com.
If you’re unfamiliar [...]

Peter Gabriel Covers Radiohead’s “Street Spirit”

A lot has been made about Thom Yorke hating Peter Gabriel’s cover of “Street Spirit” over the last two weeks and, after listening to the following video, I can see why Thom hates it. This is an absolutely terrible cover.

Julian Casablancas is an Unprepared Father

As you know, Julian Casablancas will soon become a father.
(Or Juliet might have given birth already.)
For those who have any idea what Julian was like back in his early 20s, this apparently seems like some sort of apocalyptic event because everyone is writing about it.  I’ve literally read 20 stories reusing Julian’s same quotes over [...]

New York City Cops, A Love Story

“I always took that song as a love story,” says guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. “The two people are together and the cops are fucking with them … There’s something about walking down the street as a gang.  It’s a tough place. It gets you excited.” Casablancas first shared the song with Hammond on a train back from [...]

Meet Atoms for Peace, Thom Yorke’s Supergroup

In the build-up to a featured spot at Coachella in April and a tour wrapping around the California Festival, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke needed a name for his supergroup.
“It has been decided that we call ourselves Atoms For Peace,” Yorke announced Thursday on Radiohead’s official website. “hope you like the name. it seemed bleedin’ obvious.”
The band features [...]
